Yellow Jackets Football Program
The Wilkes County Yellow Jackets football program is a non profit organization established and run by Wilkes County residents. All coaches and league officials are non paid volunteers. All program fees, gate receipts and donations go directly to the teams, not out of the county. Yellow Jackets teams are known for being competitive and hard hitting. Our experienced coaching staffs stress fundamentals, academics, sportsmanship and hard work, yet make football fun. This philosophy has made the Yellow Jackets very successful and will better prepare players for high school football. When our coaches and players walk out on the field we expect to win. This makes us different from other teams in our area. We use the best equipment available, which is updated each season. This season the 7th & 8th grade team will use the new Zenith helmet. This is the best and safest helmet available for this age level. We are the only youth football program in Wilkes with its own football field, located at the VFW Park in North Wilkesboro. All equipment and insurance is purchased from local businesses in Wilkes.
The Wilkes Yellow Jackets fields football teams and cheerleading squads in the following grade levels: 1st & 2nd (full contact tackle football), 3rd & 4th, 5th & 6th and 7th & 8th (No weight limits). All students in Wilkes County are eligible to play. This includes public, private, Christian and home schooled. The 1st & 2nd team, 3rd & 4th team and the 5th & 6th grade teams play in the Appalachian State University sponsored Mighty Mountaineer Youth Football League. The 7th & 8th grade team plays in the Queen City Middle School Football League using full high school rules. The 1st & 2nd and the 3rd & 4th grade teams practice at Peace Haven Baptist Church on Byrd Ridge Road. The 5th & 6th and 7th & 8th grade teams practice at the VFW Park in North Wilkesboro.
The Yellow Jackets started out as a 6th, 7th & 8th grade community team in the early 1970s. Know as the Mulberry-Fairplains Ruritans, the team played in the old YMCA Youth Football League. Stan and Steve Whittington began coaching the team in 1975. Their brother Mark joined them in 1977. After 37 years, the Whittington brothers are still coaching the 7th & 8th grade Jackets, which is the most successful football team in the county. In 1989, the Wilkes YMCA dropped their youth football program. Charlie Sink and Stan Whittington formed the Wilkes Midget Football League to take its place. The Mulberry-Fairplains-North Wilkesboro Ruritian team was renamed the Yellow Jackets. In 1999, a 5th & 6th grade team was added and in 2001 a 3rd & 4th grade team was added. By 2002, all of the former community teams had dropped out of the WMFL. Refusing to join the Yadkin County Sertoma League, the Jackets began to accept players from the entire county and began to play teams from the surrounding counties. In 2006, 1st & 2nd grade full contact football was added to the program. This was the first full contact program for this age group in northwest NC. Last season the Wilkes Jackets had over 150 players on its teams.

All players must have permission forms and physicals turned in before allowed to practice.
